PHILOSOPHY

My path to the field of higher education might not be considered "traditional", as I spent almost 8 years in the U.S. Navy, earned a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, and a master's degree in criminal justice prior to realizing my passion for higher education, which I stumbled upon by working part-time in an enrollment management department at a very small university.  My military and educational experiences lend to my thoughts that shape my personal philosophy as a higher education administrator.


As a higher education administrator, my philosophy is grounded in research, theory, current practices, and experience.  With the understanding that a higher education institution is a dynamic system requiring shared governance, support, and vision, my goal is to successfully connect those needs to support an institution's mission, values, and goals.


An Administrator.


As an administrator, I embrace the theory and practice of shared governance.  The benefit to an institution to have a unified faculty and administration is undeniable, and it is my belief that shared governance is necessary for an institution to function at its highest capability.  I believe that respecting individual roles is essential while always keeping the institution’s mission and vision in mind.  An administrator must understand and support the role of faculty of all levels and work together towards a common goal set forth by that institution. 


An Advocate.


Access and support best describe what I think students need for success.  As a higher education administrator, I see it as my responsibility to be a voice for students and the institution alike.  Access has historically been a hindrance for some students.  Administrators must be at the front line opening doors and opportunities to all students, not just those easily accessible, but especially to the traditionally underserved populations as well.  Supporting students requires a holistic approach to include academics, social, health, and general wellbeing.  As an administrator, I must advocate for resources and services to best support students to lead them through retention, graduation, and post-graduation success.


An Innovator.


The field of higher education is ever-changing and dynamic. An administrator must be aware of past best practices and also open-minded to new ones.  Innovation is necessary for an institution’s success, and that innovation must be cultivated and supported by higher education administrators.
